Vodafone gives hope to Ghanaian Farmers with Vodafone Farmers Club

Ghanaian farmers can now receive relevant crop and location specific information in their own language through a bespoke SIM card, thanks to Vodafone Ghana for its continues efforts to use technology to transforms lives and brings immense benefits to the society .

Through its innovativeness and creativity, Vodafone one of Ghana’s leading network operators has launched the Vodafone Farmers Club with the sole objective of helping the activities of farmers and to also improve their livelihood.

Speaking a well attended ceremony held at the Vodafone Village here in Accra, the Chief Executive Officer for Vodafone Ghana Haris Broumidis noted a recent study conducted by the African Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET) which highlighted the need to raise the standard of living for rural farmers through the use of modern standards of farming including technology to empower them; hence the introduction of the Vodafone Farmers Club which will not only seek to address concerns of rural farmers but will also bridge the gap between farmers and access to information for their products.

He said all the farmers on this scheme will benefit from specially designed data and voice packages to enhance their efforts; nutrition tips, weather information and market prices to give them an edge in selling and marketing their products.

Mr Broumidis who spoke passionately about the Agriculture sector believes that with the introduction of the Vodafone Farmers Club in Ghana, farmers would be empowered to increase their yields year-on-year. “As a developing country, Ghana is heavily reliant on the services sector; sometimes to the detriment of the agricultural sector. We want to reverse this trend; farmers should be empowered to increase their yields year-on-year and in the process, move Ghana from an over-reliance on imports to becoming an export-led economy” he said.

According to him Vodafone Ghana is committed to the growth and development of the country; its peoples and institutions and optimistic that when these structures are in great shape; Vodafone business activities will also thrive.

“The Farmers’ club is a great stroke of inspiration for this country at this stage of its development and we are happy to be leading this effort. By this product, we hope to help create new opportunities for the citizens and residents in Ghana and to make the sector very attractive” he added.

The Minister in charge of Agriculture in Ghana Fiifi Kwetey who ssion with hios presence in his remarks applauded Vodafone for taking up such an initiative to assist Ghanaian farmers with technology which will help transform their lives and the country at large. Mr Kwetey urged the executives of Vodafone to consider extending their services to the country’s extension officer in the Agriculture sector to enable them benefit from the use of technology in their duties.

He then pledge the government support for the initiative and  said his ministry will be ever ready to lend a helping hand to ensure the success of the Vodafone Farmers Club in Ghana.
